Counter-Battery & Survival Guide — Iron Nest Wiki
How counter-battery fire works in IRON NEST and how to survive it — revealing fire, the counter-battery timer, Fire Direction Centers, relocating, hydraulics and repairs.
Launch Version / Updated: August 11, 2026
In IRON NEST, the enemy shoots back. Every shell you fire reveals your position, and enemy artillery hunts you by the same triangulation methods you use on them. Surviving means understanding the counter-battery timer, using Fire Direction Centers correctly, and keeping the machine healthy. This is the guide for staying alive long enough to win.
How Counter-Battery Fire Works
- Your first shell against enemy artillery starts a counter-battery timer. When it expires, enemy guns fire on YOUR position.
- Every subsequent shot while under counter-battery pressure can extend the danger window — you are advertising your position every time you fire.
- The enemy targets you the same way you target them: via observation and fire direction. Their Fire Direction Centers (FDCs) are the brains of the operation.
The Pre-Fire Discipline
Mark ALL enemy artillery before your first shot.- From the moment the mission starts, collect every artillery-related report and plot every enemy battery on the map.
- Do not fire until every known artillery position is marked with a red token.
- Then engage — and know exactly which targets remain to be destroyed while the timer runs.
Firing the first shell of a battle with un-plotted batteries left on the board is how operators get deleted.
Fire Direction Centers: The Pause Button
- Destroying an enemy Fire Direction Center temporarily pauses counter-battery fire, buying you breathing room to restock, repair and re-plot.
- Do not destroy FDCs immediately. A common mistake is taking out the first FDC the moment it appears. The counter-battery pause is a resource — save it for the moment you actually need to work undisturbed (a long reload, a relocation, a barrage).
- FDCs are classified separately on the ballistic calculator — they get their own target classification input.
Relocation: The Only Real Defense
- Move after major engagements. A battery that has fired a dozen rounds from one position has handed the enemy its own firing solution.
- Use emergency moves (purchased at the requisition station) to relocate under pressure.
- After every relocation, verify your Iron Nest token on the map. All subsequent solutions anchor to that marker — a stale position means every new calculation is wrong.
- Keep your map clean after moving: old plotting lines anchored to the previous position must go.
The Machinery: Hydraulics & Repairs
A dead machine is a dead operator:
- Steam leaks reduce hydraulic pressure and degrade system performance. Fix them promptly — a small leak compounds into a locked turret mid-battle.
- Keep hydraulic pressure in the safe band shown on the gauge. The launch-build safe range is documented in the systems & failures guide; exceeding the ceiling risks a blowout that locks the turret and forces a repair minigame. Feather the valves, let the system cool between large movements.
- Smooth lever work — slamming the rotation lever or touching the elevation wheel mid-movement causes jams. The machine punishes haste twice: once with the jam, once with the repair.
Under Fire: What to Do
If enemy shells start landing:
- Stop firing — every round you send is a bearing to your position.
- Destroy the active FDC if the pause is available — the timer will stop.
- Relocate via emergency move, then re-verify your map position.
- Repair steam leaks and pressure damage while the pause holds.
- Re-plot from the new position before resuming the engagement.
The Operator's Survival Checklist
- [ ] All enemy artillery marked before the first shot
- [ ] Counter-battery timer tracked — know how long you have
- [ ] FDC pauses saved for critical moments, not spent instantly
- [ ] Relocation plan in place after every barrage
- [ ] Iron Nest token verified after every move
- [ ] Hydraulic pressure in the safe band shown on the gauge
- [ ] Steam leaks fixed immediately
- [ ] Powder charge reserve stocked before major operations
The battlefield does not forgive operators who confuse volume of fire with survival. Fire smart, move often, repair everything.
