Multiplayer & Co-op — Is IRON NEST Online? — Iron Nest Wiki
Does IRON NEST: Heavy Turret Simulator have multiplayer or co-op? The answer, why the game is single-player by design, and what the two leaderboard challenge modes, Steam features and community offer instead.
Launch Version / Updated: August 11, 2026Short answer: no. IRON NEST: Heavy Turret Simulator is strictly single-player at launch. There is no co-op, no multiplayer, no online lobby — and the developers' design choices explain why. This guide covers the answer in detail, what the game offers instead of multiplayer, and the honest state of community workarounds.
The Confirmed State of Play
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is there online multiplayer? | No |
| Is there local co-op / split-screen? | No |
| Is there any PvP mode? | No |
| Is there cross-play? | No — there is no online mode at all |
| Does the store page list multiplayer features? | No — the store advertises achievements, cloud saves and Steam Family Sharing only |
Nothing in the developer's feature list (30 unlockable ammo types and abilities, 100+ medals, 15 regions, two challenge modes) mentions online play. At launch, the developers had made no concrete multiplayer announcement; some post-launch press coverage has reported multiplayer as a possible future update — treat any "coming soon" claim as unconfirmed for now.
Why It Is Single-Player by Design
IRON NEST is built as a one-operator experience: a first-person simulation of a 5,000-ton walking turret where you physically walk between the teleprinters, map table, calculator, loading platform and trigger station. The whole game is the tension of one person doing the work of an entire artillery crew (see the stations guide). Designers Nick Nieuwoudt and Dominik Latos described the game explicitly as solo operation — Japanese launch coverage described it as a "one-person operation" for exactly this loop.
Adding a second player would require rebalancing the entire simulation — who reads the map while someone else loads? — which is why even split-screen does not exist. The game is a solo meditation with a leaderboard, not a party game.
What Replaces Multiplayer — The Challenge Modes
The solo-replayability layer is the two skirmish challenges, both single-player score runs with online leaderboards — the closest thing to competing against other players the game has:
| Challenge | Pressure | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Skirmish – Challenge – Counter Battery Timer | Counter-battery fire from the start | Speed, precision and survival runs |
| Skirmish – Chill – Uncontested Front | No counter-battery pressure | Kill-volume and score records |
Skirmish – Chill – Uncontested Front in Detail
The Chill run is the mode to pick when you want the scoreboard without the counter-battery clock. No counter-battery pressure means you can take your time on solutions — and its medals reward the opposite of the campaign's frugality:
- Heavy requisition spending is a medal condition, not a mistake. This is the one mode where buying everything is the point.
- Multi-kill single shells reward HCHE on a clustered formation or a packed battery.
- Long kill streaks and high kills-per-shot stack with the same twin-gun, one-target-lane discipline the campaign teaches.
So the loop is: buy deep, wait for a clean multi-kill solution, and let the score climb without ever watching a counter-battery timer. The full medal list for both skirmishes is in the story walkthrough.
Leaderboards are score-based, so you are racing other operators worldwide — just asynchronously. If your itch is competition, this is where it gets scratched. Full medal requirements for both modes are in the story walkthrough.
Steam Features You Do Get

- Cloud saves — your campaign follows you between machines
- Steam Family Sharing — pass the game (and its saves) to family libraries
- 16 languages — interface, audio and subtitles
Co-op Workarounds — The Honest Version
There are no multiplayer mods for IRON NEST at launch — the simulation is single-seat by construction, and no community netcode or modding hooks were available in the launch build. What the community does instead:- Screenshot score runs — players share skirmish leaderboard scores and gold-medal mission results in community hubs.
- "Two-screens" co-op — two operators on two machines, one runs the campaign, the other acts as spotter/radio from the wiki's spotter data and feed coordinates over voice. It is roleplay, not game code — but it genuinely mirrors the FDC-spotter relationship the game simulates.
- Community translation duty — the wiki's ongoing effort: documenting shell stats, medal requirements and correction tables so other operators don't have to rediscover them (every guide here is that work in progress).
The Verdict
| If you want… | IRON NEST offers… |
|---|---|
| Online co-op artillery crews | Nothing — it is solo |
| Competitive artillery scoring | The two skirmish leaderboards |
| A shared hobby with friends | Community docs, screenshot races, gold-medal bragging rights |
| An offline solo sim you can pause any time | Everything — 15 regions, 100+ medals, 150 achievements |
Buy IRON NEST for the 5,000-ton machine and the slow, deliberate solo ritual. It will not become a co-op game overnight — but its two leaderboards make every shot a race against every other operator on the planet.
